June 18. It’s wonderful to wake up and not have to pack your bag. Today is rest day in Springfield. As I have been on this trip I have been thinking about the difference between knowing something and understanding something. You can know a stove is hot but unless you touch it you won’t understand the heat. I knew a lot about the trail of tears but this ride has help me understand the hardship. I am so much more fortunate because I have support vehicles and a warm bed at night. During the day there are so many things that affect you: heat, wind, aches, and just missing home. Sometimes you just want to give up, but you just put one foot in front of the other and pedal one more time. Rest days help too. Time for much needed rest.
